Spending vs. Achievement
If public schools had merely maintained the level of productivity they exhibited in 1970, Americans would enjoy a permanent $300 billion annual tax cut. Now THAT would stimulate economic growth.
As of 2003, students are scoring about the same on NAEP tests as their parents did in 1970. Spending, on the other hand, has increased from $5,500 per student to a mind-boggling $11,500 per student! Clearly the system is broken, and we seem to be the only ones who care enough to fix it.
