Hank Johnson Thinks Guam is a Boat the Size of Manhattan

Can an island in the middle of the ocean – or anywhere – tip over? Congressman Hank Johnson (D-Georgia) apparently thought so when he was discussing relocation of more military personnel to Guam. After droning on and on about the physical dimensions of the small Pacific island, Johnson said he was worried that the island might capsize like Barney Frank in a hot tub.

According to Wikipedia, Guam is 209 sq. miles. I’m providing that for Congressman Johnson’s benefit as he was unsure of the size of Guam. (For the record, congressman, 12mi x 7mi would be 72 sq. miles.)

With his strong knowledge of geography and physics, one can only assume that Hank Johnson is a product of this nation’s public education system. One more reason to fix a broken system.

actually, Hank Johnson said 24 X 12 or 7(at its thinnest width) so that would be more in line with 209 square miles. And the fact that a 10% population gain would occur is a problem for the residents and the ailing infrastructure. Perhaps not capsize, but he did have a legitimate concern about the amount of people being stationed there.

      Carly,

You're right. I went back and listened to the video more closely. I didn't catch his exact words the first time, so I apologize if I misrepresented his statements re: the size of Guam. But, my point is, either he is making a joke (which he claimed to be doing) and it's inappropriate to be joking at that moment, or he really is clueless. Either way, it's not something he should brag about.
